Upon reflection of last term, I feel my work wasn't really having effect on the viewer I wanted it to. Viewing my work in more gallery settings (due to our UNA exhibitions) really helped me to see how people observe and interact with my work, and it especially highlighted for me what I want the audience to experience. I learnt a lot in terms of technique and material properties last term and felt it was time to really put this into practice pushing it further than I had done before, really aiming to impose certain feelings and emotions on the viewer. I want to push my work into a more audience based, interactive field. The only obvious way to do this for me was to remove my pieces from the wall, and discard everything I had previously decided about my work. But through development I realised, that rather than removing it from the wall, I had to create walls. I have to create a space where the audience can fully immerse themselves in the environment i'm trying to create, and, even if subconsciously, submerge themselves into the materiality of my materials. I want to make my work sculptural without making a sculpture. For me, aesthetics is still at the core of my practice. I don't intend to impose any political or contextual reason to my pieces because ultimately my interests lie in textures, tactility and materiality. I aim to use light, concrete and space to create a sense of sculpture, even though technically the work is flat against the wall. I want to think about human interaction, perception and movement - Using a balance of industrial materials, artificial light, and textiles. My inspiration and thought process is still heavily influenced by architecture and I still intend to adopt industrial processes to create my pieces.
